The Creative Database: The Words and Beats Session [Review]

by Nwabisa Sonkqayi

The Creative Database did it again. They hosted yet another successful session. This time around big names like Bozza, Live Magazine and Blackberry are proud sponsors of the movement.

Well-presented and outstandingly organised. People who attend these events nowadays clean-up quite nicely, and even the hip hop cats show up looking all posh and stylish. The crowd turnout was quite a shock. People came out to support and that kind of erased the idea that people were not going to show up because there was no free transport.

Performances

Performances were blazing as always. 300 years killed it but then again when have they ever disappointed? Illverse, the dude who won the Facebook open For Talib Kweli competition. Where he was competing against mcees like Manqoba by opening a Facebook page and get people to like it. He defeated his opponents and scooped 700 likes. No one is sure how he managed to get more than 500 people but bottom line is he got it. In conclusion he has a huge following.

Unity band was also there and they backed the likes of Melanin Fam. Those who do not know who Melanin Fam is. Melanin Fam consists of Sphura EC, with the hit song Ndiyabulela. In the group Sphura is with Jargon, if you still remember the hit song Sexy, which was and still is a hit and oh well their political updates - yep that’s Jargon. Unity band also backed the stunning Obie The Real. That one is a cool kid. Nice performance. Some people really feel their art. Niz Earl the ripper also came through hailing all the way from Ocean View. Timo showed the crowd that he got some moves in him. Principlez, X-the green panther, Quest Maguire and many other artists blessed the crowd with their rhymes.

Battle

Well Argo had fun teaching Avo a thing or two. Two things Avo over prepared or didn’t put an effort at all. By over prepared I mean, writing down all the bars and forgetting all of them. Argo is like a fire on a windy day. He is unstoppable, two kids down. He is patiently waiting for the third kid the Creative Database will throw at him. Who is next?

The Beat Battle was boring quite frankly. You would swear the beatmakers brought all the beats they don’t even like themselves. What is not forgivable is that all four of them are really dope producers. Ill Dre is responsible for that dope beat which is track number six (1kind and Invisible Virus) in the Creative Database mixtape. Dope beat right there. Blaq Scientist won best producer recently at the award ceremony for the Creative Database. Everyone knows Abet. If you know Godsend Music, mos def you know Ncutshe. But all these four great producers did not blow the crowd away.

Ill Dre won against Ncutshe and Blaq Scientist won against Abet.

Manez from us Kasi Music Kona, we see you son. Inkqayi ingena ngentlontlo. Big things start out as the little things which everyone takes for granted.

Scrambles For Money [Review]

by Nwabisa Sonkqayi

Vegita Vs Zanzolo (Chicken Murder)

Scrambles For Money but wait I think Zanzolo should refer to it as the Scratches For Money, he got schooled by Vegita and he was left there looking like an armature. Zanzolo well known for his vernacular rhymes but as from 3rd of May he may now be known for spitting whack bars. Vegita took him to school in terms of constructing punchlines which the crowd can relate to. When he got a little too personal, that's when all hell broke lose. The crowd maybe understood Vegita when he started talking about Zanzolo's ex girlfriend. Some of us might have said that well Vegita its kinda easy dissing someone about their dirty laundry, just saying. Some said he did a proper background check. On the other hand Zanzolo was left there hanging like "testi". Defenseless he was, choking on his own scripted rhymes. Its a tough battlefield out there.

1Kind Vs Overbergnerd (Black and White - No that's racist)

1kind is a battle emcee. Its no secret that if you battle him you are battling a smart kid. Have you ever been to a battle show and while you are there you feel like you at some Einstein class? 1kind did not win, the white kid won. And no black people this has nothing to do with his white genes. The judges saw that the white kid was entertaining. No wait I can't really explain why that kid won. He was jumping around- up and down. He was spitting his scripted bars, and I still cant see the advantage he had against 1Kind. Nevertheless the battle was too nice, even though there wasn't a clear winner, at the end of the day Overbergnerd won because someone had to take the cheddar.

Dark Cloud Vs Ruffkat(I brought My hommies, Dark Cloud you dig?)

Ruffkat- that cat is not rough. Yes he won. He came there all confident and all trying to be gangster, and he took the battle right out of Dark Cloud's hands. Dark cloud is hardcore. Dark Cloud is what you call an underground cat. Expectations were too high, I mean he had to leave up to the standard of the music he does, but he failed to do so. Well you see Dark Cloud this is what happens when you dont do a proper background check on someone. This is what happens when you battle someone who is not on your level- you elevate them, now my broe you all play in the same league! The crowd might not have understood Dark Cloud but hey he should have known what kind of crowd he was catering for. Ruffkat killed Dark cloud. Well if you do not agree you would agree that he connected with the crowd. He might have brought his homies with him to cheer for him, but hey the judges desicion is final.

Catching Up With Qhawe [Tha Beatmania]

KMK:
Ola fam, you good?

Qhawe: All good fam. Z'thin

KMK: You’ve been around for quite some time. Well we’ve seen cats come and disappear, what keeps Qhawe going?

Qhawe: Yeah man the reason why I still hold it down is because it keep it real to me,I don't follow trends.

KMK: Describe your style of music. We know you hip hop, but cats always say “nah me I’m Crunk, me I’m Spaza, me I’m Cheezy” etc. Wena?

Qhawe: I'm doing that real hip hop style I fuse english with xhosa in my raps over boombap beats,I always keep it me but trying to be relevant.

KMK: Where did it all start for you and who/what inspired you?

Qhawe: It all started in Molteno where I'm from and I am the member of the crew called N.E.T.O we started performing in 2003. My big brother Siyabonga Tsiovesky Melane is the only person who inspired me in hip hop he guided me in every step.
I get inspired by everything man, from my birth place (Molteno) to my family to my neighbours to my friends etc, it depends on the song I'm writing if its a love song I get inspired by a lady.

KMK: And One Movement, how did ya’ll meet?

Qhawe: One1 movement yeah, I first met Ruffkat and we formed a crew called "izinga"in 2009 and we released a mixtape then Ill Dre joined us and we were joined by Stherra and Nasty X so we decided to call it One1 Movement.

KMK: How did being together help each and every one of you?

Qhawe: I learn from each member of One1 Movement they are my brothers we are more than friends.

KMK: Your new track “I am your fan” is safe on my playlist. Should we expect something new from Qhawe soon? An album maybe?

Qhawe: Yeah I'm releasing a free mixtape "The Bigger Picture" but nothing confirmed! and One1 Movement will be releasing soon.

KMK: You are well known for your hard hitting raps and soon you are battling Invisible Virus who is also a very tight MC. Are you ready?

Qhawe: I'm ready for Invisible Virus and I'm gonna murder him on that day and tell him to quit battling about that thing hahahaha

KMK: Well, your partner in crime Ruffkat said some things in Baxter when he was battling Invisible Virus. Straight from the horse’s mouth, tell us what happened when you battled IV in town.

Qhawe: I murdered him on a freestyle battle but its hard to admit a lose so I will kill him in front of everyone 11 may @ Baxter.

KMK: Du noon’s flag is flying very high when it comes to battles, is battling something you take very seriously?
Qhawe: Yeah in Dunoon we take battles serious,we use to freestyle battle each other for fun non personal, just to sharpen the skill.

KMK: You also a beat maker, how do you balance it with the fact that you also a rapper? Are you not one of the dudes that keep all the tight beats for themselves lol?

Qhawe: hahaha nha man I know how to balance the two,I make beats and let people choose what they like and let them buy them. I also choose a beat I like, but to me customer comes first!to me beats and raps comes 50/50.

KMK: The hip hop movement in Cape Town, do you see any progress or you think we are hustling backwards?

Qhawe: Yeah I can see the progress in Cape Town hip hop,I mean in 2003 we were not performing at theatres and stuff and the sound had improved but most Cats rap with no knowledge, need to grow.

KMK: Which S.A artist are you currently bumping?

Qhawe: I'm bumping Ruffkat's album "My Journey" too nice.

KMK: Any message for Invisible Virus since you will be taking him on this coming Saturday?

Qhawe: Oh my massage to Invisible Virus is simply clean, I will kill him I will make him feel small and his close people will hate me after that day.

KMK: How can people get hold of you?

Qhawe: Okay you can follow me on twitter: @qhawe_beatmania |Facebook: Qhawe tha beatmania | WhatsApp/Call Me on : 0761997120

The Kasi Kona: The Blitz Patrollie Premier [Review]

by Nwabisa Sonkqayi

The Kasi Kona will bring you all fresh content from around the country. I @MissOniq007 attended the premiere of Blitz Patrollie.

Dress code was stylish. But yours truly rocked up in jeans, sneakers and a hoodie. Minus ten points I clearly need to check again what does stylish mean exactly.

The night was not about me, we can deal with my bad fashion taste later. The real deal that night was the film Blitz Patrollie and all the celebs were there that night. We saw David Kau, Joey Rasdien who are the main characters of the film. Legends of the industry like Akin Omotoso came to support their fellow comrades on their big night.

The film is about two cops, trying get recognition by busting thugs. Loads of humour, but then again its comedy its meant to make us laugh. I would call it a com-action film. Comedy and action film which was directed by Andrew Wessley.

The cast is people you already know from the comedy scene. Some are really good comedians but acting my brothers and sisters is something they should forget about. The film is not really predictable, yes it has a happily ever after ending but it has a humour twist in it.

The concept was not original at all. When watching the film it will remind you of movies like Rush Hour and 21 Jump Street. But hey the director defended this by saying the originality prevails through the set, the actors and the locations. Watch the film, its a comedy with potential.
